Julian Jonas Schmitt is a Berlin-based Director of Photography. He studied Art and Film at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK), the Californian Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles (CalArts), and the German Film and Television Academy (DFFB) in Berlin. In the intensive examination of narrative visual languages and the aesthetic and political premises of filmmaking, Julian worked on numerous narrative films, commercial projects, music videos as well as experimental formats together with directors from around the world. His collaborations have resulted in immersive works for clients such as Mercedes Benz, Boss, MCM, Ottolinger, Zalando, and Givenchy, and artists such as Faber, OG Keemo, Mulay, and Ahzumjot to name just a few.

I am in love with light, with its shapes and colors. Funny enough, my pictures are often described as rather dark and moody. I am not sure if you could see a style in my work, though, for me, it’s more about the approach of visualization. For me, what combines my work in cross-genre projects is the attempt to discover images in an ever-new way and a constant probing of the technical craft of camera work.

I want to create images that underline a story or a feeling. Cinematography is not always about making the most complicated and elaborate shot but about setting the perfect stage to focus on the world inside the images. At the same time, I love getting nerdy about the craft's perspective in cinematography or lighting. It’s a privilege and a wonderful playground.
