Mathieu Rabary is a self-taught French photographer and director with a Master's degree in International Business Development, currently based between Paris and Shanghai. Working as a fashion model in 2018, Mathieu started to feel the desire to become creatively independent and decided to enter the field of photography. Since then, Mathieu has been using analog and digital mediums to shoot editorials, commercials, and personal projects, and worked as a still photographer on video productions. These experiences led him to explore the production of documentaries. This year Mathieu released his first short documentary piece, A Modern Way to Thrifting, filmed on Super 8.

‘My style of work is primarily narrative-driven. Instead of focusing on how it happens, I choose to focus on why it happens and use it as a backbone theme for my projects.’
My goal is to convey a documentary experience that evokes in the viewer a sense of presence. This is why I tend to refrain from having too much control over my subjects; instead, I prefer to give them an acting direction. Meantime, it gives me enough space to capture the emotions as closely as possible.
I'm building a body of work that showcases frequently misrepresented minorities more humanely. The film is one of many tools that allows me to add a warmer feel to my work. I am also working on a long-form body of work that will turn into a book. It will be partly an autobiography, focused on the experience of becoming a man, a creative individual in our generation.
