Mariel Wiley
Her work centers on documentary narratives told through the more interpretive lens of fashion imagery, using creative liberties to tell true stories. Several themes are recurring in her practice: the juxtaposition of the people she loves with the land they live on, exploring the micro and macrocosms of humanity in our environment; and on material goods — a fascination with tactility, texture, and textile in the garments we wear and our disconnect from their methods of production.
In addition to creating photographs for fashion and product brands and editorial photo stories, Mariel plans to soon develop her first photo book project, Kokomo, celebrating the culture of her island hometown, Key West, Florida, through an exploration of color and costume. Her favorite subjects to photograph include fellow creatives (artists, musicians, writers, etc.), change-makers (scientists, athletes, activists, etc.), and individuals with compelling, genuine stories.
