Photographer Barcelona – Maputo

Step into the world of Alexandra das Neves Lehmann, an analog photographer from Mozambique, based between their hometown Maputo and Barcelona, Spain. As a young teenager Alexandra intuitively began filming and photographing their day-to-day life, capturing intimate moments between family, friends, lovers, and self. After studying fashion photography, they decided it was a path to pursue further as an occupation. Today Alex balances working on self-initiated projects and commission-based work engaging in fashion and artist collaborations.

Photography is the core of my being, embodying my primary language. In my personal work, I find liberation existing beyond the confines of societal constraints. In my editorial work, I seek to transmit the same feeling. Like language, photography is an inseparable part of my existence, growing alongside me over time. It weaves the tale of my life and those held dear to me, immortalizing our stories.

My personal pictures are raw and honest, like an unprocessed extension of myself and my inner world. It's not always ‘beautiful’ nor easy to be honest in this way; subsequently, I embrace a push-and-pull relationship with my photography. At times I need distance from my camera for it holds more than I can bear— things I struggle to confront and hide from others, even from myself. More recently, I have found solace in allowing the act of photographing to be my guiding light. It navigates me through these complexities, urging me to stay true. I have faith that discovering unapologetic self-expression possesses the power to set us free.

I seek closeness and depth in my craft. Rather than creating, I am looking to expose what is already there, fleeting moments that we often take for granted or turn a blind eye to. With my work I extend an invitation into my world. I hope it finds its way into yours.
